By Will Ohlenforst Jeff Davis Parish’s next crop of farmers gathered in Elton to learn about safe practices when preparing and operating farm equipment.
The Ag Safety Day, organized by the Jeff Davis Parish Farm Bureau Agency, was held at Doise Farms in Elton, Louisiana on November 16. It was the first open event of its kind held by Farm Bureau in the Parish. Nearly 300 students from Lacassine, Hathaway, Welsh, Elton, Jennings, and Lake Arthur High Schools were present at the event. Ronnie Anderson, president of Louisiana Farm Bureau Federation, addressed the participants following the Pledge of Allegiance and an opening prayer. “Farming is one of the most dangerous industries in Louisiana” Anderson said. “Events such as this are imperative for young farmers to become aware of the dangers and risks involved with the farming industry.” Eight stations were setup throughout the farm highlighting critical situations that farmers face daily. Representatives from Farm Bureau, Greenpoint AG, Progressive Tractor, Louisiana Workers Compensation Corporation, Elton Fire Department, Pat’s Electric, Louisiana State Police, and Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office were present at the event. The representatives gave fifteen minute presentations and demonstrations on an array of issues that included motor vehicle and ATV safety, chemical waste and disposal, PTO (power take-off) machinery, hunter’s safety, grain bin safety, and tire maintenance. Barry Bush, the event coordinator and Jeff Davis Parish Farm Bureau Agency Manager, discussed the significance of creating the Parish’s first annual Ag Safety Day. “The goal of the event is to create situational awareness for young farmers who are just beginning their career in the agriculture industry” Bush said. “It is important for the future of the industry that the next generation of farmers are educated on safe and proper farming practices.” The Jeff Davis Parish Ag Safety Day is scheduled to be an annual event sponsored by Farm Bureau.
